Ananda

They say the absolute reality is sat chit ananda. And ananda is translated as joy.

I have no direct realisation of the absolute reality, but I feel, from my limited perspective, that this ananda cannot be understood unless we get rid of English words like joy or happiness. Such words are members of polar opposites — joy is the opposite of sorrow. If any joy is a member of a pair of opposites, then it is not ananda.

I struggle to arrive at a better English translation of what I imagine this ananda is. And I think it is a complete absence of distress. You can say it is absolute peace. There is a difference between joy and absence of sorrow which becomes clear if we think a bit. I feel this ananda is more of the nature of absence of sorrow. Except, sorrow doesn’t quite capture what I feel. This ananda is also the absence of all desire, a feeling of absolute contentment and peace.
